President Donald Trump has officially withdrawn the United States from the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

This is the second time Trump has taken the U.S. out of the agreement, having done the same during his first term.

Under former President Joe Biden, the U.S. had rejoined the agreement

Trump announced his intent to leave soon after taking office, but the agreement requires a year before the withdrawal can take place.

The U.S. also is expected to withdraw from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This could make it hard to rejoin the Paris Agreement, since the U.S. first would need to rejoin the UNFCCC.

Remaining in the agreement was in name only

Though the withdrawal only became official a year after Trump took office, the administration had effectively been ignoring the agreement from the start.

The State Department had shut the Office of Global Change, which manages international climate agreements. Employees who worked on climate change were fired

The Trump administration also has stopped reporting climate data to the United Nations (UN).
